The Sugared Sun Was Shining
In 1896, New York State passed the Raines Law, which restricted the sale of alcohol on Sundays, with a crucial loophole: hotels could serve drinks. Every saloonkeeper in town must have scratched his head, rocked back on his heels, and wondered how much the apartment upstairs might cost. Raines Law "hotels" were soon common, but saloons had little legitimate use for the rooms. Like butterflies to a sweet-smelling bloom, the Raines beds were soon filled with prostitutes.
