December 31, 2013
More Than in Europe Boston; Kalamazoo, Mi | 1983-1986

His business education there had focused heavily on marketing to the exclusion of sales—who got an MBA to be a salesman? It was an abstraction at best to Koch and his fellow grad students, something that just sort of happened at a company after the marketing team got done targeting the product. At worst, salesmanship was seen as a grimy, grubby thing you did as a last resort in the business world.

Beats Interrogating Suspicious Characters In Underworld Bars…or Does It?

""I saw a picture in an abandoned building, and there was a bridge in the background," he explains. "In the East Bay, there are maybe five bridges, so it's a process of elimination. You find the bridge. You look at the angle. You use Google Street View to get the ground-level angle. You look at the aerial view. And then you comb the area for something that looks like an abandoned building, and you find it.""

500% increase on 1? In 30 years? Not That Impressive…

December 19, 2013
Prologue: America, King of Beer Turin, Italy; Paris; Washington, Dc | 2009-2010

Then, within thirty years, the number of American craft breweries increased more than 500 percent.

Joseph Heller Talks AboutCatch-22 (1972)

Over a million copies were sold in those six weeks and it made theTimes paperback best-seller list. That made me happy. And it also amused me, in a kind of sadistic way, because I knew that many of those million copies had been bought by people who wouldn't be able to get past page six or eight. But that didn't bother me, because I get the royalties anyway—people don't have to read it, just buy it—and it's nice to get money from the people who make millionaires out of Harold Robbins and Jacqueline Susann.

Catch-22Revisited (1967)

During the war we came from Corsica by plane and stayed five or six days each time. Often we would take short walks during the day in search of curiosities and new experiences. One time on a narrow street, a sultry, dark-eyed girl beckoned seductively to me and a buddy from behind a beaded curtain covering the entrance to a store. We followed her inside and got haircuts.

Ski Jump Nose

December 18, 2013
The Halifax Hunt Club

She looked like a perfect coal miner's daughter, twenty-seven years old, with a streak of gray above her wide forehead like Susan Sontag's, a strong jawline, and a little ski jump of a nose. She pulled her charcoal cardigan tight around her, soft armor against the world, and faced the questions with obeisance.

The Dutch have Out-Americaed America

"For the three weeks after the Sint arrives, children watch the Sinterklaas news channel, a national television mega-production. They believe every word. The program said this year that the boat from Spain had turned back to collect the Sint's gold staff, which had been left behind; my children freaked out."

Even that, for a microdistiller, can be a frustrating scenario. Shops will simply allow it to run out, and then order the same amount the next month, so for half of the month there is no Midnight Moon on the shelf.
"It drives me crazy," said Joe. "If it runs out, order two cases next time, you know?"
